Medical Waste Management Is A Key To Maintain Hygiene In Healthcare As Well As In Environment

Medical Waste Management

Healthcare organizations need a thorough Medical Waste Management system that will ensure proper care, safety, and health of their staff and the surrounding environment. Without proper waste management, they risk damaging their reputation and endangering themselves and their patients. To ensure the proper management of medical waste, healthcare organizations implement a comprehensive plan that includes standard operating procedures, optimizing controls, and analyzing profitability.

Furthermore, an effective Medical Waste Management system should include a periodic efficacy assessment process, which will identify areas of improvement and control the costs of removing medical waste.

States have strict rules governing the disposal of medical waste. The EPA no longer has any regulatory authority over this waste, and the Medical Waste Tracking Act expired in 1991. Additionally, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also regulate medical waste.

A key to sound Medical Waste Management is segregation. Most respondents agreed that medical waste must be separated at the source, reducing the amount of infectious medical waste in the process. Colored liners and labeled containers help with this. Infection-related medical waste is particularly harmful and must be properly handled. If possible, medical waste should be properly managed in a hospital to reduce environmental impact and costs. But, in the meantime, the need for improved standards and education cannot be overemphasized.

Besides human surgery specimens and tissues, biohazardous waste can also include chemotherapy waste and pharmaceuticals. Depending on the type of waste, this waste can include gloves, disposable gowns, towels, and intravenous solution bags. The containers also require a temperature indicator, such as autoclave tape. Finally, any items with sharp edges and prongs must be stored and handled properly. A properly managed Medical Waste Management program ensures the safety of both patients and the environment.
