Adaptive Strollers Can Be A Lifesaver For Kids With Special Needs, As They Are Easy To Use And Light Weight
Adaptive Strollers |
Adaptive Strollers are a mobility device designed to provide children and adults with a higher level of support than what is offered by traditional strollers. They are used to help with mobility in a wide range of settings, from everyday outings to shopping trips, social gatherings and other events.
The most popular type of Adaptive
Strollers are tilt-in-space models, which can be adjusted to accommodate
a variety of positioning needs. These positions include tilt for pressure
relief, improved posture, passive correction of kyphosis and scoliosis,
digestion enhancement, increased sitting tolerance, breathing assistance, etc.
These models are often a good option
for kids who require the use of a tracheostomy tube, since they can be
configured to accommodate the ventilator, oximeter and other medical equipment
that may be required for the child to breathe or swallow.
There are also Adaptive Strollers that can be converted into wheelchairs, allowing
the child to use them both indoors and outdoors. These are great options for
children who do not yet require a power chair, as they are lighter in weight
and can be broken down into smaller pieces for transporting to and from the
vehicle. Unlike power wheelchairs, they can be easily maneuvered in tight
spaces and on uneven surfaces, such as sidewalks and roads.
Adaptive
Strollers are becoming increasingly popular with
families due to their ease of use and the ability for kids with special needs
to participate in activities that other children can do. However, the high cost
of these devices is often a barrier for some families.
Many families prefer to have their kids
start off with an adaptive stroller instead of a wheelchair as their first
mobility device, as it is usually lighter in weight, more compact when folded
and easier to carry from place to place. This is particularly true for children
who will eventually need to transition into a manual wheelchair as their
abilities progress and their functional requirements change.
It is important for clinicians and
complex rehabilitation technology (CRT) providers to consider the benefits of
an early intervention adaptive stroller as part of their evaluation and recommendations.
However, it is equally important to consider the family’s budget and current
funding sources before making a recommendation for adaptive mobility equipment.
Baffin Technology launched a three-in-one adaptive
stroller device, YOGI, in May 2022. This stroller has been especially designed
for children with a conditions like spina bifida, spinal injury, cerebral
palsy, and muscular mystrophy.
